Program
TEDxHalifax will feature some charismatic, dramatic, and thought-provoking speakers and performers! We are looking for them to tell an impactful story, reveal something surprising and unexpected, do something the audience will remember forever, and even share an idea that could change the world.
TEDxHalifax 2009 will be short event preceding TEDxHalifax 2010. It will feature:
- 3 full length live TED presentations (18 minutes or less)
- 2 full length TED Talks from TED.com/Talks
- A musical performance
- An introduction from TED's Chris Anderson (video).
The session will be followed by a short reception.

Speaker 2009: Uffe Elbæk
Talk: It's all about the mindset! Uffe Elbæk, Founder and former principal of The KaosPilots - International School of New Business Design & Social Innovation. Uffe Elbæk was born in 1954 and as he says himself has already managed to live several lives - personally as well as professionally. From 1991 to 2006 he has been the principal of the KaosPilots in Denmark, but is also a regular contributor to a range of leading Danish and International newspapers and magazines. In november 2001 and again in 2005 Uffe Elbæk was elected to Aarhus City Council (Denmarks second city) for the Danish Social-Liberal Party. He is also on the board of several Danish and international organizations, and has over the years received numerous honors and awards, ranging from his appointment as ambassador for the local premiere league football club AGF to Knight of the Dannebrog. Uffe Elbæk is the father of 31 year old Frej and step-dad to 32 year-old Jacob. He lives in a big old appartment in the heart of Copenhagen, together with his partner Jens. Uffe Elbæk was also the CEO of World Outgames 2009 (from 2007 to 2009) and is today Special Advisor for the new leadership-team at the KaosPilots in Denmark . Performer 2009: Lee Park
Name of Performance: TBD Born in Seoul Korea, raised in Edmonton, Lee took up permanent residency in Halifax ten years ago. Lee has been multiple winner of NS Tourism and Culture and federal SOCAN awards, including an internship this spring to study Eastern European klezmer and classical Arabic music in Israel. This year Lee has been was an ECMA nominee for the “Event of the Year” professional industry award for Libertango. Globe and Mail review called Libertango “one of most sensational musical experiences east of Montreal.” Lee is also creating a cultural showcase with aboriginal urban youth fusing traditional First Nation's art with her group Estringz Project. This project is endorsed by the provincial government, Halifax Miʼkmaq Friendship Center and the nationally acclaimed, Eastern Eagle. Currently Lee is on scholarship taking a one year Journalism degree from Kings University. She will be starting her masters at Mcgill in 2010. Speaker 2009: Joan McArthur-Blair
Talk: TBD Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair, President of the Nova Scotia Community College, is a strong leader and educator with extensive experience in post-secondary education roles. Her background includes teaching, faculty and curriculum development, international projects and administrative roles. She is a champion of the unique work that community colleges undertake to meet the needs of students, industry, and communities, and believes that the role of the community college is critical in meeting the future economic and social needs of Nova Scotia and Canada. |

Speaker 2009: Peter MacLeod
Talk: TBD Peter MacLeod has worked with leading organizations in North America and Europe, including Fast Company magazine, Vancouver's Wosk Centre for Dialogue, Britain's Demos think tank and the Kaospilots, a Danish school for business design and social innovation. In 2001, he created The Planning Desk, an innovative studio for public systems design that produced a series of high-profile projects to improve the character, quality and efficacy of citizen-state interactions. A fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy at Queen's University, he writes and speaks frequently on the citizen's experience of the state, the importance of public imagination and the future of responsible government. A graduate of the University of Toronto and Queen's University, he subsequently pursued doctoral studies on the role of federal constituency offices at the London School of Economics, and is the 2008 recipient of the Public Policy Forum's prestigious Young Leaders Award. |
